We feel it is appropriate to perform this workout on Labor Day. We celebrate the lives and labors, as well as mourn the loss of 19 brave souls who made the ultimate sacrifice protecting their community from the most relentless adversary ever faced by any human being: the forces of nature itself.
Fire is a fearsome foe. Hotshots are the fearless fighters who dare to approach the flames and declare, “this far and no further.” They cut and dig their way across the landscape to try and contain the blaze. Many times, the fire is forced to obey. But sometimes the fire and the firefighter go out together.
So we remember. We remember that it takes courage beyond measure to fight against nature and its forces. We remember that even when a battle against fire is won, the struggle with nature is never finished. We remember that somewhere within our communities, there are people who risk their lives, and families who pay the price for the safety of our homes, our lands and our loved ones. We remember as we perform this workout in honor of those fallen heroes, that each time we lift the barbell, that rep has a name. To all of you firefighters and your families, we remember you, and we thank you.
