The strict overhead press used to be a separate event in olympic weightlifting. It was removed from competition in 1972. Some say this was done to protect the athletes’ lower backs. Others argue that because of the difficulty of judging the press, it had become too political and so it was removed in order to avoid more controversy. Either way, when the press went out of competition, it also went out of style, unfortunately. We are trying to bring it back (into style).
